What Happens When You Miss One Service?

John 20:24

24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.

At one time none of the disciples believed Jesus would rise from the dead. When Mary Magdalene told the disciples Jesus was alive and she had seen Him, they didn’t believe her (Mk 16:11). Before Mary came to tell the disciples Jesus’ body was gone, not one of them had gone to check the tomb. After Mary’s report, Peter and John went to the tomb to see for themselves (Jn 20:3). Let’s be honest, it’s not  easy to believe someone could rise from the dead.

Thomas can be commended on one point-he isn’t interested in being with the disciples if Jesus is not there. He doesn’t want to hang out with the disciples; he wants to be with Jesus.

However, because Thomas was absent from the first church service after the resurrection, he missed a wonderful blessing. Thomas didn’t go to this meeting with all the other disciples because he didn’t expect Jesus to be there. Many believers miss church services today for the same reason because they have  forgotten what promise of Jesus in Matthew 18:20? 20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

Because Thomas skipped this one service, he missed out on an incredible experience. Every time we are absent from a church service, we forfeit the possibility of an amazing spiritual experience. The most exciting times in my Christian life have taken place at church services. As an unbeliever, I first heard God speak to my heart during a church service. I heard God’s unmistakable call to preach at a church service. I saw my children make their public decisions to receive Christ at church. At church services I feel the presence of the Lord Jesus more strongly than any other place, and so will you, if you believe He is here.

If you really believe Jesus is present at church services, what will you say with the psalmist, as recorded in

Psalm 122:1? 1 I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord.
